SYRACUSE, NY -- Another outstanding week of rugby was completed in the New York State Rugby Conference, as the second week of competition was held Saturday and Sunday, September 20-21. 20 clubs remain undefeated heading into the third weekend.

Syracuse and Rochester both climbed to 3-0 in Division III Club Men, as the premier clubs from 2002 continue to assert themselves as the teams to beat again this season. Syracuse, the defending champion, posted a 45-5 win over previously unbeaten Genesee on Saturday afternoon. Rochester, the 2002 runner-up, held off Finger Lakes, 29-10.

Men’s Premier Division I saw Cornell move to 2-0 with a 45-0 shutout of Syracuse on Saturday. Syracuse moved back into a third-place tie at 1-1. Buffalo remains 1-0, a half-game back of Cornell.

In Men’s Division II action, a host of teams are knotted atop their respective division standings. In Empire East play, Binghamton and Colgate both improved to 2-0 over the weekend. Binghamton outlasted Paul Smiths, 15-5, while Colgate continued to impress with a 32-19 win over Union. Colgate is playing its first season at the Division II level.

Empire West leader Buffalo State moved to 2-0 with a 16-0 blanking of Rensselaer. Fredonia and Geneseo, both idle last week, claimed wins over Oswego and Hobart respectively. Fredonia outran Oswego, 33-23, while Geneseo handled Hobart by a 47-3 margin.

Cortland and Potsdam stand atop the Excelsior East III standings, both at 1-0. Cortland was a 29-10 winner over Clarkson on Saturday.

Women’s Premier Division I Collegiate play opened with Syracuse and Buffalo wins. Syracuse topped Union, 39-5, while Buffalo hung on for a 17-11 win over Binghamton.

Adirondack Division II saw St. Lawrence move to 2-0 on the season with an impressive 34-0 decision over Clarkson. Western DII has a logjam at the top of the standings, with Brockport, Fredonia and St. John Fisher all at 2-0. Brockport blanked St. Bonaventure, 55-0; Fredonia shutout Niagara, 15-0; and Fisher snuck past Rochester, 12-10.

Colgate and Oneonta remain tied atop the Finger Lakes DII standings at 2-0. Colgate topped Geneseo 17-5, while Oneonta beat Hamilton, 3-0, in a defensive battle.
