Fall Gets Off to Resounding Start

SYRACUSE --
The New York State Rugby Conference (NYSRC) opened its 2003 fall season as 29 matches were contested on Saturday and Sunday. It is the 17th season of competition for the union.

"It is always an exciting time of the year for us when the fall season opens," commented Michael Hodgins, NYSRC President. "We look forward to another outstanding season of rugby in New York State."

In Division III Club Men, Genesee, Rochester and Syracuse all moved to 2-0 on the season. Genesee defeated South Buffalo, 40-5; Rochester downed Lockport, 78-5, and Syracuse bested Cortland-Homer, 36-24. Syracuse is the defending champion in the conference. The opening to the club men's season took place last weekend.

Syracuse University got the season started on the right foot as it claimed a 28-24 win over visiting Canisius in Men's Premier Division I. In Sunday action, Cornell shutout RPI, 52-0.

At the men's Division II level, Colgate jumped on Paul Smiths, 32-10, in its first match at the Empire Division II level. Colgate moved up the ranks from Division III a year ago. In Empire West action, Le Moyne, the Upstates champions, topped RIT, 15-8.

Clarkson and Niagara both won in Division III Excelsior play to start the season. Clarkson topped Oneonta, 29-10, while Niagara claimed a tough road win over Alfred, 19-17.

Women's Division II play started right where it left off in 2002. RPI, which was unscored upon in 2002, blanked Clarkson, 45-0. Colgate also shutout William Smith, 55-0, while St. Bonaventure held off rival Buffalo State, 15-10.

Women's Premier will open play next weekend.

One of the largest Local Area Unions (LAU) in the United States, the New York State Rugby Conference governs over 70 clubs at the men's and women's club, men's and women's collegiate, and youth levels. It is a proud member of both the Northeast Rugby Union (NRU) and USA Rugby.
