Go Forward, Support The Cure: The Syracuse University And University At Buffalo Women’s Rugby Teams Play To Defeat Breast Cancer
The Syracuse University Women’s Rugby Football Club (SUWRFC) will host the fifth annual Susan G. Komen Game for the Cure on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 2 PM. The match is the only one of its kind in the country with the intent to raise donations for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, swiss replica watches the world’s largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer. This year’s match will be played at Syracuse University’s lower Hookway field, home to the SUWRFC and men’s team.
In 2007, members of the SUWRFC brainstormed ideas for how they could raise awareness in the university and central New York communities about women’s health, replica rado watches with the specific goal of helping to defeat breast cancer. After reaching out to the CNY chapter of Komen for the Cure, the concept of a Game for the Cure was born.
In the inaugural game in October 2007, the teams raised over $3,000 by selling raffle tickets, Game for the Cure t-shirts and bracelets, and Syracuse Rugby-imprinted shorts. The SGK game has since become an annual fixture in the Syracuse and Buffalo teams’ schedules, continuing to grow in the amount of donations and awareness it raises.
As part of the fundraising effort, both teams are encouraged to seek out local businesses willing to make monetary and raffle item donations. Past items have included food, gift certificates, best fake watches and store merchandise.
Three students started the Syracuse Women’s team in 1997. With little to no experience of the game, the girls reached out to SU alumnus and former men’s team player Greg Fehrman. ‘Coach Greg’ has guided the club ever since. To date, the SUWRFC has made it to 11 conference championships and four regional championships. In 2009, replica watches their status as a premier club was solidified when they took home the Division I State Championship plaque. It is the club’s hope to continue expanding in membership and influence, spreading the good word about rugby and the SGK Game for the Cure along the way.
