NYS Women’s U19 Finish Off a Perfect 2010

Rochester, N.Y.- On an extremely hot day at Aardvark Park, the NYS Women’s U19 All Stars completed their 2010 campaign with a decisive 46-7 win over the Alleghany Rugby Union Women’s U19.

NYS controlled the game from the onset controlling pace and playing a very controlled style of play. “Battling the heat was an incredible challenge for both teams” stated Greg Fehrman, head coach of the NYS team. “ ARU didn’t travel as well as they wanted so we have to put things into perspective that it played a large role in the conditioning aspect of the match.”

Sprinkler systems were used to cool the players as 10 minute breaks were taken to keep players hydrated and cool. Jessica Ewanic from Hamburg Rugby was named “Woman of the Match” and collected the match ball.

On the Woman of the Match, Fehrman stated, “All of the players played very well and I don’t want to list all of them with the chance I miss someone; but Jessica really is starting to raise her level of play. When we selected her last year, we knew we had a high energy player that would be in this program for many years, she has taken huge strides in improving her play. Our success is just a symptom of the strides youth rugby is taking in NYS and the coaches of the High School programs.”

In three matches this year, the NYS team played stifling defense only allowing one score and learned that great defense will afford great attacking opportunity. In closing Fehrman said, “When Lisa Goodberry (Fairport HS), Reggie Tift ( Fairport HS)) and I sat down three years ago to discuss the direction we thought this should go, Team was never discussed; it was always about building a Program. We all feel this Program is right where it should be."

The three coaches have completed their three-year commitment to the Conference. They are planning to re-apply for another three years once the Conference advertises the position.
