McQuaid Wins Boys Title, Fairport Claims Girls
NYS Rugby General Announcement
Results of Inaugural New York State High School Rugby Championships
Boys Championship
This past weekend four teams from across New York State converged on Albany for the first ever State Based High School Rugby Championships. McQuaid Jesuit and Fairport represented Western NY. Saratoga represented the Capitol Region and New Rochelle from downstate filled out the brackets.
McQuaid defeated Saratoga and Faiport defeated New Rochelle on Saturday May 30th. McQuaid and Fairport met for the third time this season to determine the High School Boys Champion.
Led by senior Tony Ortega's two scores and junior Max Klotz's goal kicking, McQuaid secured a 23-8 victory on Sunday over Fairport.
Fairport, looking to avenge its two earlier losses to McQuaid, kept up the pressure in McQuaid's end to score first. However, McQuaid came right back as senior Micah Rogalski stole a Fairport lineout and rumbled in for a unconverted try for a 5-5 tie.
Shortly thereafter, Ortega made a brilliant, individual run through the heart of the Fairport defense for a converted try and a 12-5 McQuaid lead. Fairport stormed right back before half and capitalized on a penalty for a 12-8 halftime score. The second half would all be McQuaid as Max Klotz converted two penalty kicks inside Fairport's 22 for an 18-8 lead. Ortega capped his MVP performance by scoring a try on a multiphase to round out the scoring. The State Championship win capped an amazing season 15-2-1 season for McQuaid Jesuit, with its only two losses coming to Single School National Champion, and fellow Jesuit school, Xavier High School.
Girls Championship
The Fairport Girls represented NYS in the 1st HS Rugby Championship. Fairport won the tournament and earned the title of New York State Champions.
Fairport played Renssalear Rugby Club the opening day, winning, 26-5. The backs played a tremendous game using their speed and agility to dominate their opponents. Tries were earned by Nicole Dejean (2), Kristen Turiano (1) and Emily Doyle (1). Additionally, Nicole Dejean made three conversion kicks.
Fairport ran past Saratoga Rugby Club in the Championship game, 20-7. The forwards dominated the game winning and helped to keep control over the ball.
Outstanding defense was seen by senior captain Danielle Geith and junior Cecily Brown making many hard tackles to shut down the Saratoga attack. Fairport's prop, Hannah Crerand, and hooker, Casey McCarthy, dominated in the scrums. Tries were scored by Nicole Dejean (1), Kyra Horne (1), and Kate Armstrong (1).
Dejean earned the Most Valuable Player, earning 24 of Fairport's 46 points in the Championship.
"This season has been an outstanding year for the growth of rugby in New York State", commented Randall Johnson, NYS VP of Youth. "The addition of two new teams in Western NY to the rugby community has bolstered an already solid foundation built upon by all previous volunteers. Congratulations to all players, coaches, parents, and spectators on a wildly successful season."
Finishing out the season is the Class B Championships this Sunday, June 6, at Aardvark Park. This is sure to be a great match-up with newcomer Canandaigua taking on Southtown Saints in the battle of the underdogs. Both teams scored victories against previously undefeated opponents. Match time is set for 1 pm.
