UB Rugby Coach McGuire Retires
BUFFALO, NY (May 20, 2010) -- The University of Buffalo Rugby Club announces the retirement of Head Coach Mickey McGuire. The UB Rugby Club and Alumni Association extend their greatest appreciation and thanks to Coach McGuire for twenty-three
years of service and leadership.
Over one thousand University at Buffalo students had the pleasure to play
for Coach McGuire, or as he would say, he has had the pleasure to coach
them. Coach McGuire’s teams are known and remembered for a high caliber of
sophisticated and fair play. During Mickey’s time at UB, the team has
evolved from a club loosely associated with SUNY Buffalo into a club with
Division I and Division III teams and a strong relationship with and
funding from the University.
Rugby in New York State and beyond has also benefited from Coach McGuire’s
leadership, mentoring and development of Collegiate and High School Rugby.
Many of his former players are or have been Collegiate and High School
Coaches. Similarly, those teams reflect Mickey’s love of game and safe
play.
A member of the Buffalo Rugby Club, Mickey's rugby career is highlighted
with his serving on the USA Rugby Board of Directors, the staff of the
Collegiate All-Americans, the Northeast Rugby Union Collegiate
Select-Side, the East RFU Collegiate Selects, and the first ever US
Women's U-23 Team. A former college Dean now working in the fire service
industry, Mickey will continue to work on special projects related to UB
Rugby.
