Pool Selected Following NRU Cup
The Northeast Rugby Union Men’s College All Stars player pool for the 2010 program cycle has been finalized following last weekend’s NRU Cup Tournament in Albany, NY. The annual selection tournament pits the squads from Met NY, New York State, New England, and this year’s new entry, the All-Ivy Barbarians.
The All-Ivy squad swept their two matches with a score of 12-0 against New York State and then followed up with a 22-0 win over NERFU. In the New York game Derek Lipscomb from Columbia scored two tries and Tommy Brothers from Dartmouth provided the extra points while in the NERFU match Lipscomb and Nate Brakely from Dartmouth had outstanding games and led the All Ivy barbarians to their first successful outing.
In the first match of the day Met NY showed substantial improvement and pushed New England all the way in an exciting 29-22 win for the NERFU team. New England cruised out to a comfortable 22-0 halftime score with tries from Brierly(URI), Quick(URI), Stern(BU), and Bonin. Brierly added one conversion. Met NY s pushed hard in the second half with tries by Wilson, Molly(SUNY Stony Brook)and Garcia(Sacred Heart). NERFU got an insurance try but Lobello(Suffolk CC) finished off the scoring for Met NY and Joyce(Sacred Heart) added the conversion.
The consolation game was won by NYS, 15-0, over met NY in a better performance for the New York squad then their fist game. Their opening try was scored by Fellouris(Brockport) off a driving maul. McCorkle(Hobart) finished off a long break by Jenks(Brockport) and Agugliaro(Univ. Buffalo) capped off the scoring on a 5 meter scrum.
The players also collected $300.00 that was donated to the Mike Jones Supplemental Needs Trust Fund to help the family of the Albany player that was tragically injured in February. For additional information, or ways to donate, please visit michaeljonestrust.org.
The final NRU squad will be selected over the next two weekends with camps in Buffalo and NYC before facing off against the Royal Engineers in Boston, May 12. The team finishes up their preparations for the NCAS with a three day camp in Boston Memorial Day weekend.
