Syracuse Claims Women's Collegiate D1 Title

SYRACUSE (Oct. 25, 2009) -- Syracuse outlasted Cornell, 5-0, in the Women's Collegiate Division I championship game here on Hookway Field.

Saturday's rain had an impact on the field conditions and ultimately the quality of play.

The game's only try came after Syracuse missed a penalty kick and Cornell attempted to run it out. Pinned in its own end, Cornell turned the ball over and Syracuse's Rachel Sachs capitalized. Sachs, one of the top players in the Northeast, made an incredible run for the score.

The rest of the game was as hard hitting as any two teams could get, with both teams playing tremendous team defense. Syracuse held off a late charge by Cornell at the end of the game as they had the ball around the 22 for the final 3-4 minutes.

Both attacks just couldn’t get going in the mud and it was a tough sailing for both teams. There were some key players on both sides that could not play, including Leigh Cushing on Cornell who was injured last week. Not having Cushing made a big difference in their attack.

Both teams advance to the Northeast Rugby Union quarterfinals on Saturday, November 7. Syracuse, NYS Rugby's top seed, earns the NRU #4 seed and will host the NRU#5 (NERFU#4). Cornell, the NRU#6 (NYS#2) seed, will travel to face the NRU#3 (NERFU#3).
