NYSRRS Represented at HS Nationals by McKenna and Zornick

PITTSBURGH (May 19, 2009) -– Sean McKenna and Will Zornick recently represented the New York State Referees Society (NYSRRS) at the national level, as both were appointed to the referee’s panel for this year’s High School National Tournament.

The 2009 USA Rugby National Guard Under-19 Championship tournament was held at Pittsburgh’s Founders Field, May 15-16, and was hosted by the Pittsburgh Harlequins. McKenna and Zornick, both of the New York State Rugby Referee Society (NYSRRS), were appointed to the Referee Panel for the HS National Championship Tournament.

“I was proud to represent our Society at this prestigious tournament and hope this appointment will help establish an ongoing relationship with the National Guard High School Championships and the New York State Rugby Referee Society, McKenna said.

McKenna was an Assistant Referee for three games; Utah United (UT) v. West Shore United (PA), Christian Brothers (CA) v. Gonzaga College (DC) and the U19 3rd Place game featuring Kansas City Jr. Blues (MO) v. West Shore United (CA). Mr. McKenna was appointed a Match Official on Saturday and refereed the 5th Place game featuring Penn HS (IN) v. Brownsburg RFC (TX).

Zornick, a Sophomore at SUNY Buffalo, was appointed to Assistant Referee four games during the tournament. On the Girls side of the tournament, he was an Assistant Referee for the Rutland (VT) v. Fullerton (CA) and Fullerton (CA) v. Sacramento (CA). For the Boys, Mr. Zornick Assistant Refereed the Los Angeles Cougars (CA) v. St. Thomas (TX) and the Highlanders (UT) v. LA Cougars (UT) game.

“The HS/U19 Nationals was an outstanding event. I am thankful that I was able to participate, and for officiating a match at this level and venue,” Zornick said.

The NYSRRS owes a debt of gratitude to Jamie Rooney of USA Rugby and the Pittsburgh Harlequins for their generosity. Mr. Rooney was the lead instructor for the Level I Referee Clinic held in Buffalo early this year.

“The appointments of Sean McKenna and Will Zornick are terrific achievements for both the NYSRRS and NYS Rugby,” said John McTigue, Chair of the Referee Society. “It demonstrates the considerable growth we have enjoyed, which has been a product of our collaborative efforts.

Other recent milestones, according to McTigue, include Pat Laczkowski recently being USA Referee Educator certified; Sean McKenna’s promotion to the Referee’s B-panel and being invited to become an IRB certified Educator; the recent appointments of Bruce Marzahn and Mark Kielbasa as Referee Coaches; the addition of many new referees; the creation of a Board for the NYSRSS; and the addition of a (still under construction) website, www.nysrrs.org.
