McQuaid's Tony Canali Passes Away

1949-2009

Canandaigua: Peacefully on May 9, 2009, age 60. He is survived by his loving wife, Cora (Perhamus) Canali; and their daughter, Jordyn; former wife, Connie Canali and their children, Meghan (Chad) Valentine of CO, Gia Canali (Matthew Manus) of CA, Reva Canali, James Canali, both of CO; 3 grandchildren, Jonathan, Aiden, and Preston Valentine; mother, Margaret (Pietropaolo) Canali of VA; 2 sisters, Anne Marie (Richard) Hermann of VA, Peggy (John) Bolstetter of IN; mother-in-law, Duannah Perhamus, father-in-law, John Perhamus; brother-in-law, Casey Perhamus, all of Canandaigua; 3 nieces and 1 nephew; a great-nephew. He was predeceased by his father, James A. Canali in 1982.

Tony was born in Canandaigua on May 9, 1949. He graduated from St. Mary's School and Canandaigua Academy, class of 1967 where he won first place in the annual Phelps-Gorham Oratorical Contest. While at C.A. he starred on the Track and Cross-Country Teams. He earned a BA in Education from Boston College, Masters Degrees in Counseling from Colorado State Univ. and Vermont Univ. Tony taught and counseled at St. Mary's School in Canandaigua, St. Louis Academy in CO, St. Mary's Academy in CO, Platte Canyon High School in CO, and Canandaigua Academy. He was presently working as Director of Guidance at McQuaid Jesuit H.S. where he founded the McQuaid Rugby Rebel Knights.

In addition, he coached Rugby, Indoor & Outdoor Track and Cross-Country. His teams won numerous Sectional titles and awards. Tony was named the 2009 All-Greater Rochester Indoor Track Coach of the Year. He at one time taught History, Music and directed plays. His passion was Rugby and he played for Boston College, the Harlequins and the Rochester Aardvarks. His other passion was running, and he founded the Canandaigua Area Track Team program.

Friends may call Monday, May 25, from 4-8 PM at Johnson-Kennedy Funeral Home, Inc., 47 N. Main St., Canandaigua. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, May 26th at 10 AM at St. Mary's Church, 95 N. Main St., Canandaigua. Interment will be in Pine Bank Cemetery, Cheshire.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christopher's Challenge, 600 Hosta Circle, Webster, NY 14580 (donations go towards purchasing test kits for bone marrow transplants) or the Leukemia Society, 4053 Maple Rd., Suite 110, Amherst, NY 14226.
