Side Places Second at NRU Cup
NYS Collegiate Men's Select Side Shows Well in Albany
ALBANY -- The New York State Collegiate All Stars finished runner-up at the Northeast Rugby Union Cup on April 25, falling to New England in the opener and beating Met New York in the second match. New England topped Met NY in the final match of the round robin to take the Cup.
The NYS All Stars took a quick 17-0 lead on New England. New England scored two quick tries to end the half and only trailed 17-14. NERFU scored two tries and a penalty in the second half and a late touch-down for NYS wasn't enough; final score 27-22 NERFU.
With their chances for the Cup on the line, the defending champs from Upstate regrouped to beat their Downstate rivals 50-10. NYS needed a Met NY win in the final match, hoping to win on point differential, but it wasn't to be. Met NY pushed New England deep into the second half but ended up losing 39-24.
Head Coach Dave De Salvia said, "Playing back to back 80 minute games is never easy, and the heat of the day made it all the more difficult. I was concerned after the first game we would lack the energy to match a fresh team. Somehow the guys re-energized themselves and played with guts and determination."
The second year all star coach added, "I was so impressed by efforts of all the players - they played to the point of fatigue and beyond."
The NRU coaching staff selected 14 players to the NRU player pool, led by New York State Captain and NYS All Star of the Year Steve Patch.
