ROCHESTER, NY -- Syracuse, Plattsburgh and RPI captured its respective championships in Divisions I, II and III at the 2009 Men's Collegiate Upstates this afternoon. It was the 41st annual event for NYS Rugby, hosted by the Rochester Colonials at Genesee Valley Park.
"It was a great day of rugby and the Rochester Colonials did an outstanding hosting this event," said Mike Hodgins, NYS Rugby President. "We saw teams playing in new divisions really assert themselves today and this bodes well for our fall 2009 schedule."
Syracuse shutout Brockport, 26-0, in the Division I championship game. Syracuse earned its way to the title game with a 31-7 win over Binghamton and a 24-6 decision over St. Bonaventure. St. Bonas topped UB in the consolation final, making its first-ever appearance at the Division I level.
Plattsburgh also pitched a shutout in the Division II final, a 10-0 decision over Buffalo State. Plattsburgh worked its way through a tough bracket, using a late try to run by Hamilton, 10-7, and then sliding by Geneseo, 6-3. Hamilton ran past Le Moyne, 19-3, in the consolation game.
RPI posted a strong showing in Division III, running past Syracuse B and Brockport by a combined 78-0 in the opening round games. RPI then blanked Hobart, 14-0, in the final to claim the title. Geneseo topped Brockport B, 17-12, in the consolation match.
