NYS Rugby Hosts Largest Player Camp in Conference History
BUFFALO, NY -- NYS Rugby hosted its largest Player Development Camp in conference history this past weekend. The camp was held in Orchard Park, NY, at the Buffalo Bills' Fieldhouse at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
Over 150 U-19 players attended the camp, the largest total in the five years of the weekend. John Williams (Welsh Rugby Union), Gary Townsend (Rugby Football Union, England) and George Betzler (USA Rugby) served as the lead presenters at the camp. Participants were able to take part in small group fundamental instruction, followed with large group theory sessions.
The instruction was supported by over 20 members of NYS Rugby coaching community. As part of the weekend camp, those coaches earned four USA Rugby continuing-education credits.
"The numbers generated at this Player Camp show that rugby is growing at an exponential rate in New York State," said Mike Hodgins, NYS Rugby President. "Our conference continues a national leader in its programming and support of the game at this, and every, level and we look forward to continued growth moving forward."
With the completion of the Player Camp, NYS Rugby's 2009 Game Development Series concludes with over 450 participants taking part in five events. In January, the conference sponsored a USA Rugby Scrum Camp, led by Bill LeClerc, in Syracuse. February saw a USA Rugby Coaches Development Program (CDP) held in the Albany, coupled with a IRB Level I Referee Training Course. As part of this past weekend's event Buffalo weekend, a second IRB Level I Referee Training Courses was also held.
