Collegiate Players Encouraged to Take Part
NRU Collegiate All Stars Raise The Bar
The NRU All Star Men’s Collegiate Rugby Program is dramatically increasing the number of fixtures and training camps in 2008-2009 in an effort to achieve success at the national level.
In response to a spate of poor results at recent national championships, the NRU Program’s Head Coach Mike Hodgins and his staff are scheduling matches and camps in August and November of 2008 – a time of year when representative collegiate rugby is traditionally not on the agenda.
The early programming is aimed at generating genuine support from the college club community much earlier in the process – particularly from Division One colleges, identifying talent in the fall, elevating the program’s public profile, building player combinations, gaining match experience, and educating college players about the prestige and opportunities offered by representative selection.
“The Northeast is an undiscovered country, as far as unearthing talent is concerned. With over 100 college clubs to choose from, you’ve got to believe we have some All-Americans out there waiting for their chance. I am challenging all those coaches and players out there to step up and be represented”, Coach Hodgins said. “We also intend on identifying the top collegiate eligible club players in the NRU and actively recruit them into our program so reaching out to the entire rugby community is vital to our success.”
“Representative rugby is what it’s all about – playing at an elite level, making a new group of friends, playing in big televised games, getting in front of the national selectors, and having a shot at representing the USA.”
Mitch Dow, who plays #10 for New York Athletic Club’s Division 1 side, was the lone All-American Honorable Mention in 2008 for the Northeast. The 2008 Collegiate All-Americans recently completed a tour of New Zealand where they played three games, finishing 1-2. USA Rugby CEO Nigel Melville led and coached the squad, assisted by Dartmouth coach Alex Magelby.
