Captures Bronze Medal in 2008
WNY Has Strong Showing at ESGs
The Western NY Men's Rugby ESG squad entered Binghamton in 2008 with
enthusiasm and spirit. Most of the young squad had played together all
summer. For what they lacked in experience, they made up for in enthusiasm and fitness.
FRIDAY:
The squad downed NYC and Long Island in the first two pool games but then lost solidly to Adirondack. The heartbreaker of the day came to a loss against Hudson Valley. The squad beat themselves. They tried to move from a wide open style to a controlled ruck/maul game. The squad could not adjust and lost confidence.
The last loss put the team in a tough position for gold medal contention. It would have to beat Central on Saturday by a significant margin in order to make the gold medal match.
SATURDAY:
The squad came out strong but lost to Central NY during the last game of pool play. Central NY was to play Adirondack for the gold medal. This put the squad in the bronze medal match against Hudson Valley. This time, there would be no heartbreak; not, at least, for Western NY. Western solidly beat Hudson Valley in a 10 minutes-a-half game.
Adirondack defended their gold against Central with a win by the
slimmest of margins. Congrats to Central NY for a fine showing.
The Western Women's team won the gold in a sudden death overtime
thriller.
Many thanks to coach Swing DePoint, Tui Osborne and manager Ryan Steimal. Also, many thanks to the many players that came to practice to support the Western NY ESG squad.
