NYS Women’s U-19 Places Second at NRU-LAUs

Albany, NY -- In it second assembly ever the NYS Women’s U-19 again placed second in the NRU-LAU Championships held this June 14th and 15th in Albany.

Delayed due to thunder for an hour and half, NYS opened with a fast-paced game and cruised to a 20-0 victory over the Met-NY All Stars.

“Our speed was a big factor and we were able to substitute at the right times," stated NYS Head Coach Greg Fehrman "Met struggled with numbers and the temperature (90 degrees) and humidity played a factor for them.”

The semifinal win pitted NYS against the 2007 champions NERFU, which topped Eastern Penn, 25-15, on Saturday. NERFU opened the scoring on a penalty kick, but NYS fired right back with a beautiful try to go ahead 5-3.

Just prior to the half, NYS was three meters from the tryline but a succession of miscues and a penalty allowed NERFU to gain the entire field and score as time expired.

The second half proved more of an even match, but NYS could not get the handle on the ball with many unforced knock-ons. The final score of 18-5 was not indicative to the actual flow of the game as possession proved to be about equal.

“Our level improved dramatically from last year to this weeked," Fehrman said. "Last year, we were no match for NERFU. Today, we matched them athletically, but when you play a great team your mistakes are magnified."

The NYS Women’s U-19 will be assembling in Rutland, Vermont, in August for a match against the Vermont U-19 squad.

“We are happy with our direction, but we need to continue to improve as coaches and players,” Fehrman said in closing.
