NYS Rugby's 2008 U-19 All-Star Recap
ROCHESTER, NY -- NYS Rugby's 2008 U-19 All-Star games took place here on Sunday, June 8. The day was a huge success, even in the midst of record-breaking temperatures in the region. The event showcased the future of NYS Rugby and was hosted by the Rochester Colonials.
The girls’ game matched two teams of All-Stars, determined by their team’s finish in the regular season. The Red Hot Tamale’s roster consisted of players from Fairport, North Tonawanda, Orchard Park and East Aurora. The Blue Amazon’s roster consisted of players from City Honors, Kenmore East, Kenmore West, Genesee, and a player from East Aurora.
The game was a defensive battle for most of the first half, with Erika Huard scoring two tries to give the Blue Amazons a 14-0 lead at half. Despite temperatures reaching into the 90s, the girls continued to battle late into the second half. The Blue Amazons were able to secure the victory with a third try by Huard and a forth try by wing Jamilia Muhammad. The Blue Amazons scored a spectacular try at the end of the match from an excellent counter attack by Bridget McDonnell. The final found the Blue Amazons outlasting the Red Hot Tamales, 29-7. Erika Huard was awarded match MVP honors for her three tries and excellent play in the rucks and mauls.
The boys’ game divided the teams by region. The Boys West team consisted of players from Kenmore West, Canisius, North Tonawanda, Buffalo City Honors, South Buffalo, and Orchard Park. The Boys East team consisted of players from Fairport, McQuaid, Pittsford, School Without Walls, Syracuse, and Southern Tier.
The East struck first early on a drop-goal penalty kick by fly-half Matt Zablotny. The East then brought the lead to eight after a try on a number eight pickup by Sean Burke. At half, the East led 8-0. In the second half the West was able to get its offense rolling by banging the ball through the forwards. The West came within the East 22 on a few occasions, only to have the ball poached in tackle. Centers Tony Ortega and Tyler Norris both scored tries for the East late in the half resulting in a 25-0 final. East hooker Andrew Yang received MVP honors for his excessive work-rate and crafty poaching throughout the game.
