2008 NYS Rugby High School Season Wrap-up

BUFFALO, NY (May 25) -- It was a beautiful May afternoon at Delaware Park in Buffalo for the NYS Rugby High School D1 Championships.

The Girls D1 Championship pitted undefeated #1-seeded Fairport against the #3-seed Buffalo City Honors. In the semifinals the night before, Fairport handily defeated Orchard Park, while City Honors barely got past Kenmore West.

Fairport was unable to match the strength and speed of City Honors, which cruised to a 40-0 victory over Fairport. Jamilia Muhammad was named MVP of the match. Muhammad will be attending Syracuse University in the fall.

The Boys D1 Championship Game featured a rematch from earlier in the season between Rochester-area rivals East #1 seed Fairport and East #2 seed perennial powerhouse McQuaid Jesuit.

In the semifinals, Fairport defeated West #2 seed Orchard Park, 27-7. McQuaid scored a try within the final minutes of their semifinal match to defeat West #1 seed Kenmore West, 21-18.

The Boys D1 championship match was a see-saw battle, with the lead changing three times. McQuaid jumped out to an early advantage with an unconverted try and penalty kick to take a 8-0 lead. Fairport then took the lead with a converted and unconverted try for a 12-8 lead. McQuaid answered back by scoring a spectacular try to gain a 15-12 lead. The Fairport forwards dominated the rest of the game resulting in a penalty kick and an unconverted try for a 20-15 victory. Fairport scrum-half Allen Kundin was named match MVP. Kundin will be attending SUNY Geneseo in the fall.

Orchard Park dominated the Boys U-19 D2 division finishing undefeated. Fairport captured the U-17 division by avenging their only loss earlier in the season to Kenmore East.

On Sunday, June 8th, the Annual NYS Rugby High School U-19 All-Star games will be held, showcasing the conference's best young talent. The games will be hosted by the Rochester Colonials at Edgerton Park in Rochester. The Girls game will kickoff at 2:00 pm, followed by the Boys at 4:00 pm.
