South Buffalo Advances to D3 NRU Semis
BUFFALO, NY (Apr. 12) -- On a cold and windy afternoon in the old 1st ward of Buffalo, the South Buffalo Thugs defeated the Gotham Knights, 36-7, to advance to the semifinals of the Northeast Rugby Union (NRU) playoffs.
The Knights started strong but couldn’t match either the strength of the Thugs forwards or the speed of their backs. The game began with Gotham playing deep in South Buffalo territory until a S.B defensive take away sent Tim Malysza down the field and an outlet pass to Adam Deisinger left him with a clear path for the games first try. The Thugs would never look back.
After numberous attemps on Gotham’s try line, South Buffalo finally scored when Mike Disarno took the ball in from a few feet away. The Knights came back with an offensive surge of their own, taking possession and driving the ball to score their only try of the game.
South Buffalo got back on board before the end of the first half when Toby Miller got the ball and ran it straight down the middle of the field into the try zone.
Early in the second half South Buffalo's Mike Disarno scored again when he picked up a loose ball off a srum and ran it in for a try. Rob Beck gave the Thugs their fifth try of the game. Frank Zabawa and Rob Beck teamed up to score the game’s final try.
South Buffalo RFC will travel to Montclair, NJ, April 26-27, for the NRU Div III Championship.
