NYS Rugby Officially Opens 2007 Season


SYRACUSE, NY -- New York State Rugby (NYS Rugby) completed it first full week of play on Sunday, as 75 clubs are vying for playoff spots in 11 divisions in men's club, and men's and women's collegiate play.

In men's club play at the Division III level, the Syracuse Chargers have jumped out to set the pace yet again this season. Five-time defending champion Syracuse (2-0) has outscored its opponents by a 97-12 margin. South Buffalo, which squared off with Syracuse in last year's final, is also off to a 2-0 start. Syracuse and South Buffalo have their annual showdown this Saturday in Syracuse. Resurgent Genesee currently stands at 2-0, following a 39-17 win over Cortland-Homer on Saturday.

Collegiate Men's Premier Division I saw Syracuse top Cortland, 41-22, and Buffalo slide past Brockport, 14-12.

Syracuse was the only member of Collegiate Women's Division I in action. It ran past Ithaca by a 43-0 margin.

Collegiate Men's Division II East is paced by Colgate, which stands at 2-0 after wins over Siena (38-27) and Plattsburgh (17-15) to open the season. Albany is 1-0-1 after playing to a 12-12 draw with Union on Saturday. In Men's Division II West action, St. Bonaventure and Rochester are both 2-0 to start the campaign. Bonas brough home a 39-3 win over Le Moyne, while Rochester snuck past Buffalo State, 17-15.

In Women's Division II West play, Cortland topped visiting Buffalo State, 22-10, while Hamilton shutout Fredonia, 5-0.

In Collegiate Women's Division III West action, Le Moyne topped Niagara, 53-0, Canisius blanked William Smith, 35-0, and St. Bonaventure outlasted St. John Fisher, 46-5.
