U.S. Womenís National Under-19 Team Falls to England Under-19s in First Match of its Tour Abroad

AYLESBURY, England - The USA Womenís National Under-19 Team lost the opening game of its England and Wales Tour, Saturday, falling to a very talented England U-19 Team, 31-7.

After two days of practice in bitter conditions, the young American women were happy to have a break in the wet and windy weather, playing the game against the RFUís development squad on a near perfect day. England opened up the scoring in the seventh minute with an unconverted try. The USA responded three minutes later when fullback Jessica Watkins intercepted a ball in the USA twenty-two and went eighty meters to score under the post. The conversion was made by Karen Hunt and the USA had an early 7 ñ 5 lead.

The USA was able to put together some strong passages of play but it was England who scored again at the 22 minute mark to regain the lead 12-7. A third England try late in the half put the USA U-19ís down 17-7 at half.

The second half opened with another early try by the RFU to make the score 24-7, which seemed to put the match away for the young England squad. The U.S., however, responded with its best passage of play and had control of the game for the next 10 minutes. The game went back and forth with England picking up a try late in the half and the USA coming back at them in the dying minutes. England was able to hold off a late U.S. try and the U.S. lost an extremely physical match 31-7.

ìIt was a really good game and we are happy with the result,î said Head Coach Bryn Chivers. ìWe were unable to match the English at the breakdown, but the performance of the forwards in the set pieces was a revelation.î

The USA U-19ís have a day off before going back to practice on Tuesday. On Thursday they travel over to Wales where they will meet the Wales U-19ís in Cardiff for the womenís second match of their tour.
