Syracuse Women's RFC Partners with SGK for the Cure

Syracuse, NY -- Today the Syracuse University Womenís Rugby Football Club (SUWRFC) and Susan G. Komen for the Cure Central New York Affiliate have announced the formation of a partnership to support awareness initiatives around the issue of breast cancer. The two groups announced that there not only will be fund raising but educational opportunities during the campaign.

They have also announced that the Syracuse Womenís game vs. Ithaca College in September will be the Official Susan G. Komen for the Cure Game to be held at Hookway Field on the Syracuse campus. The Clubís Faculty Advisor Mr. Robert Wilson stated that, ìIt sends a powerful message to have female athletes support education and good practice in this area and also meets the universityís mission to engage constructively with the larger communityî. Neither organization is aware of any other partnerships with the foundation and womenís rugby but both welcome the challenge of raising awareness in the rugby community and also supporting the brave breast cancer survivors.

Because 10 million women around the world could die from breast cancer in the next 25 years without the cure, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is fighting every minute of every day to save every life.

Because every woman is at risk for breast cancer ñ a disease that strikes at random and for which the causes and cures are still unknown ñ we know that every moment counts: Without a cure, 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will continue to be diagnosed with breast cancer ñ a devastating disease with physical, emotional, psychological and financial pain that can last a lifetime. Without a cure, an estimated 5 million Americans will be diagnosed with breast cancer ñ and more than 1 million could die ñ over the next 25 years. Without a cure, an estimated 25 million women around the world will be diagnosed with breast cancer ñ and 10 million could die ñ over the next 25 years.

Today, Komen for the Cure is the worldís largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists. For more information about Susan G. Komen for the Cure Central New York Affiliate, breast health or breast cancer, visit www.komencny.org or call 315-472-6162. Komen Foundation Education Coordinator, Olivia Kronhaus, stated, ìWe know how important early detection is. When a breast cancer is found early, through annual mammograms beginning at age 40, clinical breast exam at least every 3 years beginning at age 20, and annually from age 40 on and monthly breast self-exam beginning by age 20, cancer survival rates increase.î

As part of a total approach to breast health, it is also important that women become familiar with their own bodies; play an active role in their own health; and develop a close partnership with their health care providers. The partnership with SUWRFC will allow Komen CNY Affiliate to educate women to do just that.
