Caretta Reese Named to U19 Women's National Team; Rachel Sachs Earns Alternate Nod
Squad Set to Tour England, Wales
Boulder, Colo. -- USA Rugby announced today the USA Women's National Under-19 Team that will play a three-test series in England and Wales, March 22 - April 2, 2007. Caretta Reese (St. Bonaventure) was named as a member of the squad, while Rachel Sachs (Syracuse University) was named an alternate.
The team will once again turn to Laura Parker for a sense of leadership, as she returns as captain, but this time she leads a side that includes only eight players with previous international experience. Joining Parker in the front row will be Megan Thompson, who has five U-19 caps and has the opportunity to become the most capped USA U-19 player on this tour. Kati McCormick, Kerrie Hughes and Candace Barley round out the returning forwards. Barley, who has moved from center to eight this year, will again be the youngest player in the squad. Several new forwards look to make an impact on this tour including prop Justine Harris from Army and flanker Alex Hartley from Brown.
There is less experience in the backs although the new players all looked very impressive at the recent U-19 Camp in Chula Vista, Calif. Jenny Beamon, the feisty scrumhalf from Tennessee returns, along with Lisa Henneman from Kent, Wash. and Schmarrah McCarthy from Purdue. The new players in this backline include center Alicia Hartley (twin sister of Alex) from Brown, as well as the speedy wing pairing of Sadie Anderson from Fort Collins, Colo. and Jessica Watkins from Stanford.
"This Chula Vista assembly was a great success," said Bryn Chivers, U-19 Women's National Team Coach. "The entire staff was very impressed with the overall speed of the players, and I think that we accomplished a great deal, in regards to coming together as a team, in the short time that we had. This camp also allowed us an opportunity to work with the younger players who may not be ready for this year, but we will definitely be looking at for the future of this team.î
Thirteen of the 24 players named to this squad participated in the U-19 Invitational National All-Star Championship (INASC) in Tennessee in early November and for many of these it was the first time they had been viewed by the U-19 WNT Coaches.
"We held eight camps and clinics this year, and somehow we still missed some players," Chivers added. "The U-19 INASC really did provide us with the opportunity to see new players that we otherwise would not have invited.î
The USA U-19s open their international tour March 25 against the England U-19s in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. On March 29, the U.S. squad travels to Cardiff, Wales to take on the Welsh U-19s. They then return to Aylesbury where they will finish the tour with a game against the Canadian U-19s on April 1.
