Championship Rugby comes to Western New York
Northeast Collegiate Championships on tap at GCC
Batavia, NY -- The Northeast Rugby Union(NRU) will hold its 2006 Collegiate Championship Tournament this Saturday and Sunday, November 11-12, at Genesee Community College (GCC) in Batavia, NY. Twenty-four teams in three divisions of men's and women's action will be competing for berths to the USA Rugby National Collegiate Championships.
The event is being held in Western New York for the first time and will be hosted by the Genesee Rugby Club.
ìWe are very excited about bringing this event to Western New York," said Fred Bressette, NRU VP of Collegiate Rugby. "Genesee Community College is a first class venue and the Genesee Rugby Club has a fantastic reputation for hosting premier events like this. All the participants are looking forward to an outstanding weekend of championship rugby.î
Action kicks off at Saturday at 9:00 a.m. with the Division III semifinals and concludes with the Division I semifinals 3:00 p.m. The Division I semis feature Army vs. USMMA Kings Point and Harvard vs. Boston College on the menís side, and Army vs. Vassar and Cornell vs. Brown in the womenís bracket.
Last weekend's first-round action did not fare well for the men's NYS seeds. In Division I action, University at Buffalo bowed out, falling to Harvard, 27-25. Cornell dropped a 25-10 decision to USMMA Kings Point, and Syracuse University was defeated by Boston College, 27-6. In men's Division II action, SUNY Geneseo fell to Vassar, 71-31, and University at Albany lost to the University of Maine, 18-16.
On the womenís side, Cornell advanced to the Division I semfinals by topping UMass, 30-25, in overtime. Buffalo was blanked by Brown, 45-0.
Also in action this weekend from NYS are Siena in womenís Division II and Hamilton College, which send clubs to compete in both menís and women's Division III action.
Sunday will feature championship and consolation games in all divisions, concluding with the women's Division I championship at 1:00 p.m., and the Menís Division I final at 3:00 p.m.
