NYS Rugby Holds 2006 Collegiate Championships

CANTON, NY -- NYS Rugby held the 2006 Collegiate Championships here on Saturday afternoon. St. Lawrence hosted the event, which returned to a college campus for the first time 1993.

For the second consecutive year, and third in the last five, Buffalo captured the men's Division I title, topping Cornell, 8-5, in overtime. The Buffalo pack matched up with Cornell in the final for the fourth consecutive year. Buffalo earns New York State's NRU No. 1 seed, while Cornell takes the No. 2 ranking.

Syracuse ran past Cortland, 47-0, in the Men's Division I qualifier, earning the NRU No. 3 seed.

In the Women's Division I championship, Cornell captured its ninth title all-time with a 20-12 decision over Buffalo. Cornell jumped on the board early and often, and then held off a late rally from Buffalo. Cornell and Buffalo will be the No. 1 and No.2 NRU seeds, respectively, from NYS.

Albany was a 25-12 winner over Geneseo, capturing the Men's Division II championship. Albany earns the No. 1 seed for NRUs, while Geneseo grabs the No. 2 nod.

Women's Division II held its semifinals this afternoon. Brockport rebounded from an early deficit against Colgate, going on to an 18-6 win. In the second semifinal, Siena was a convincing 35-0 winner over Geneseo. Siena will host Brockport next Saturday, Nov. 4, in Latham, NY, for the Division II championship. The winner advances to the NRUs on Nov. 11.

Both the men's and women's Division III title matches were two of the most exciting of the day. In the women's final, Hamilton earned a 1-0 (kicks) win over St. Bonaventure after playing almost 110 minutes of rugby. In the men's match, Hamilton came back to top Niagara, 15-12, in a game that featured the fastest pace of play on the afternoon. Both Hamilton teams advance to NRU action as the Division III representatives from NYS.
