NYS Rugby Conference Coaching Seminar

NYS Rugby Conference Coaching Seminar
ìA view from the forefront of the gameî

RIT Inn & Conference Center Friday, March 3 * 5:00 p.m.

Last year we embarked on the New York State Player Camp at RIT. It was a resounding success, where over 100 players who attended the camp and left having had an opportunity to enhance their understanding of the game as well as having a fun and enjoyable experience.

We felt that if this project is to become more sustainable, and enhance rugby throughout New York State, we should look to enhance the knowledge of coaches throughout the principality.

Since the advent of professionalism, and subsequent analysis, the game moves forward at a resounding pace. If we are to stay in touch with the modern game, and develop our players we all need to be constantly up skilled in the demands of the game.

We will be holding a Coaches Seminar on Friday 3rd March at The RIT Inn and Conference Center from 5-8 PM. This program will be presented by NYS Rugby Conference for coaches working for teams within our Union. John Williams of the Welsh Rugby Union and George Betzler from USA Rugby will be the featured presenters.

There is be no charge for this event but you MUST be pre-registered. Food will be available for purchase, beverages will be provided.

Find below an outline of the Seminar:

Momentum:
The game is based around GO FORWARD, FLOW AND MOMENTUM. There are a number of strategies you can use to ensure your team optimises their chances of winning the gain line battle, thus giving you the go forward that is essential to become an effective team.

All of your practise sessions are geared around fast ball scenarios, how many times in the game can you actually guarantee fast ball? Do you ever train for Slow Ball? Do you have a strategy to turn slow ball back to fast ball? If we try to play off slow ball, the defensive team will invariably win the battle for gain line, thus turning the game in to a war of attrition, not a fast flowing evasive game that we all love to coach and watch.

The Lineout:
This is probably one of the most dynamic and constantly changing areas of the game. Through analysis teams have to constantly come up with new ways of winning ball, competing on opposition ball and stopping or developing driving lineouts. Top level coaches recognise the fact that without a quality lineout that guarantees you good ball, the chance of winning any game becomes significantly diminished. We have the opportunity to look at the modern lineout whilst having the opportunity to ask any questions that may result from the discussion.

The Scrum:
Although the scrum is not as dynamic as the lineout in terms of evolution, there are subtle changes introduced each year. These changes are brought about because of the professionalís games demands and coaches desire to get the edge on the opposition, stealing a march, and gaining the1 & 2 % advantage that is needed to overcome the opposition at the sharp end of the game. Again we have an opportunity to discuss these slight differences and pass them on to our own players, ensuring New York State Rugby keeps on progressing.
