SYRACUSE, NY -- The first weekend of
October saw a lot of intense, tight
action in NYS Rugby play. Several teams
asserted their standing for postseason
play, while others put themselves into
striking position.
Men's Club Division III division play
saw play hold true to form at the top as
Rochester and Syracuse both rolled to
easy wins. Rochester, moving to 5-0,
eased past Lockport, 73-8, while
Syracuse improved to 4-0 with a 44-3 win
over the Barracks Rangers. Binghamton
used a 66-3 win over Finger Lakes to
improve to 4-1 and put a strong hold on
second place. Genesee evened its record
to 2-2 with a tight 27-24 win over
Cortland-Homer (2-3).
Coming into the weekend, Collegiate
Men's Premier Division I had a three-way
tie atop the standings with Binghamton,
Buffalo and Cornell all standing at 2-0.
Buffalo and Cornell could not settle
matters as they played to a 10-10 draw,
as did RPI and Brockport, who battled to
a 22-22 standoff. Syracuse topped
Canisius, 34-27. Binghamton will meet
Cornell on Wednesday, Oct. 5, in Ithaca,
in an important game.
Four teams are deadlocked atop
Collegiate Men's Division II East as
Albany, Colgate, Cortland and Union are
all 2-1. Union blanked Siena, 32-0, in
a game with local-rival implications.
Albany handed Colgate its first loss of
the season, 29-18, and Cortland ran past
Le Moyne, 77-3. College Men's Division
II West finds Rochester standing alone
at 3-0 after a tight 31-28 win over
Geneseo (0-3). St. Bonaventure was a
77-7 winner over Buffalo
State.
Collegiate Men's Division III East play
remains tight after three weeks of play.
Clarkson and Plattsburgh both improved
to 2-0 - Clarkson was a 34-17 winner
over Hamilton, while Plattsburgh shutout
St. Lawrence, 24-0. Oneonta moved to
2-1 with a 50-18 win over Paul Smiths.
In Division III West play Niagara
continued its fast start and moved to
3-0 with a 27-15 win over RIT. Oswego
earned its first win of the year with a
17-5 decision over St. John Fisher
(1-1).
In Collegiate Women's Division I action,
Buffalo remains undefeated and atop the
standing after its 10-0 win over
Syracuse (1-2). Cornell improved to 2-1
with a 67-0 win over Union.
Collegiate Women's Division II East play
finds RPI atop to the standings with a
1-0-1 record following its 12-10
decision over St. Lawrence There is now
a four-way tie for second place between
Albany, Colgate, Oneonta and St.
Lawrence. Oneonta topped Colgate, 17-7,
while Albany blanked Cortland,
30-0.
In Collegiate Women's Division II West
action, Fredonia improved to 3-0 with a
22-13 win over Buffalo State, who fell
to second place at 2-1. Brockport moved
to a second-place tie following its 27-0
win over Geneseo, who dropped to 1-2.
RIT earned its first win of the season
with a 20-0 win over St. John
Fisher.
Collegiate Women's Division III East
play finds Siena standing unblemished at
2-0. Oswego improved to 1-1 with a 18-0
win over Plattsburgh. In Division III
West action, St. Bonaventure continued
its strong play, moving to 2-0 following
its 27-0 win over William Smith. Le
Moyne topped Cornell B, 23-0, and moved
into a three-way tie for second with
Niagara and William Smith.
