NYS Rugby High Schools Conclude Successful Season

The New York State Rugby Conference completed its High School Rugby season last weekend with an impressive showing in all divisions. This is the first year in which the conference boasted four divisions - boys division one, boys division two, boys junior division (for freshmen and sophomores) and the girls division. The total number of teams competing was 17. As the number of teams in the conference increase, so does the level of competition.

In the boys first division McQuaid rolled through the competition for its third straight conference title. McQuaid combined a high level of athleticism with great passing and solid game play. McQuaid and Fairport represented the NYSRC at the third annual Northeast Regional playoffs. McQuaid missed nationals by one game, but had an impressive third place finish with wins over Fairfield Prep (Met NY #3) and St. Johns Prep (NERFU #1), their only loss coming to Xavier High School (Met #1). Fairport did not fair so well on the weekend, falling to Xavier, Fairfield Prep, and Keio Academy.

City Honors/Genesee took first place in the boys second division by nearly shutting out every team it faced. Second place in the division came to the impressive newcomer Kenmore East.

The girls division was as competitive as ever with nearly half of the games being decided by less than a try. The championship game was played between the returning champions Fairport High School and their western rivals Kenmore West. Both teams had exceptional forwards and good back play. Fairport defeated Kenmore West for its third straight state title and also received an invitation to play in the Nationals in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Unfortunately due to school commitments Fairport will not be able to attend the tournament.

The boys junior division appeared to be a great success as it gave an opportunity for more participation among younger High School students. McQuaid, Fairport, and Kenmore West all participated in this division. The Fairport boys remained undefeated and won the first state title in the junior division.

The NYSRC second annual all-star games will be held at Genesee Community College on June 5. The girls kickoff at 12, the boys at 1:30. Last year's game was a showcase of the high level of talent among the conference youth teams, this year promises to be even better!
