Clubs Now Advance to NRU playoffs

BATAVIA, NY -- For the second consecutive year, Cornell captured the men's and women's Division I titles at the New York State Rugby Collegiate Championships, held Saturday at Genesee Community College. A championships-record turnout enjoyed a sunny fall afternoon as 20 club competed for division championships and the right to advance to Northeast Region playoffs.

Collegiate Men's Premier Division I
Cornell earned its second straight Division I title with a 13-3 win over Buffalo. The teams met for the third consecutive season in the title match, showing why they are the class of New York State collegiate men's rugby. Buffalo entered the game as the No. 1 seed, closely followed by Cornell at No. 2.

Cornell will receive the NYS Rugby No. 1 seed in the NRU playoffs, while Buffalo will be the No. 2. Syracuse earned the No. 3 NRU seed with a 13-7 win over a much improved Brockport club in the qualifying game.

Collegiate Men's Empire Division II
St. Bonaventure continued its strong play by topping Colgate, 18-3, in the championship game. Featuring a roster that returned every key contributor from a year ago, Bonas proved to be a little too much for Colgate, which was playing its first season at the Division II level.

St. Bonaventure will be the No. 1 seed for NYS Rugby in the NRU playoffs, followed by Geneseo at No. 2 and Colgate at No. 3.

Collegiate Men's Excelsior Division III
Both undefeated coming into the Division III championship game, Niagara slid by Paul Smiths, 15-12, to claim the title. Each club showed marked improvement this season, and the championship game was one of the best matches of the weekend.

With the title win, Niagara advances to the NRU playoffs, to be played Nov. 13 at UMass-Amherst.

Collegiate Women's Premier Division I
Cornell claimed its fifth straight Division I championship with a 32-0 blanking off Buffalo. Cornell has allowed just three points in six games this season. Cornell advances to the NRU playoffs at the NYS Rugby No. 1 seed, while Buffalo earns the No. 2 nod.

Collegiate Women's Empire Division II
Two No. 2 seeds shocked the opposition in semifinal action Saturday. West No. 2 Geneseo slid by East No. 1 St. Lawrence, 7-0, while East No. 2 RPI topped West No. 1 Fredonia, 7-5.

Geneseo will host RPI in the Division II championships game on Saturday, Nov. 6.

Collegiate Women's Excelsior Division III
No. 1 seeds Oswego and Niagara will square off next Saturday for the Division III title after taking care of business in the semifinals.

East No. 1 seed Oswego topped West No. 2 St. Bonaventure, 7-5 in one semifinal, while West No. 1 Niagara was a 22-7 winner over East No. 2 Siena.

Niagara will host Oswego for the Division III championship on Saturday, Nov. 6.
