NYS Rugby Crowns 2004 Collegiate Champions
Clubs Now Advance to NRU playoffs
BATAVIA, NY
-- For the second consecutive year, Cornell captured the men's
and women's Division I titles at the New York State Rugby Collegiate Championships,
held Saturday at Genesee Community College. A championships-record turnout
enjoyed a sunny fall afternoon as 20 club competed for division championships
and the right to advance to Northeast Region playoffs.
Collegiate
Men's Premier Division I
Cornell earned its second straight Division I title with a 13-3 win over
Buffalo. The teams met for the third consecutive season in the title match,
showing why they are the class of New York State collegiate men's rugby.
Buffalo entered the game as the No. 1 seed, closely followed by Cornell
at No. 2.
Cornell will receive the NYS
Rugby No. 1 seed in the NRU playoffs, while Buffalo will be the No. 2.
Syracuse earned the No. 3 NRU seed with a 13-7 win over a much improved
Brockport club in the qualifying game.
Collegiate
Men's Empire Division II
St. Bonaventure continued its strong play by topping Colgate, 18-3, in
the championship game. Featuring a roster that returned every key contributor
from a year ago, Bonas proved to be a little too much for Colgate, which
was playing its first season at the Division II level.
St. Bonaventure will be the
No. 1 seed for NYS Rugby in the NRU playoffs, followed by Geneseo at No.
2 and Colgate at No. 3.
Collegiate
Men's Excelsior Division III
Both undefeated coming into the Division III championship game, Niagara
slid by Paul Smiths, 15-12, to claim the title. Each club showed marked
improvement this season, and the championship game was one of the best
matches of the weekend.
With the title win, Niagara
advances to the NRU playoffs, to be played Nov. 13 at UMass-Amherst.
Collegiate
Women's Premier Division I
Cornell claimed its fifth straight Division I championship with
a 32-0 blanking off Buffalo. Cornell has allowed just three points in
six games this season. Cornell advances to the NRU playoffs at the NYS
Rugby No. 1 seed, while Buffalo earns the No. 2 nod.
Collegiate
Women's Empire Division II
Two No. 2 seeds shocked the opposition in semifinal action Saturday. West
No. 2 Geneseo slid by East No. 1 St. Lawrence, 7-0, while East No. 2 RPI
topped West No. 1 Fredonia, 7-5.
Geneseo will host RPI in the Division II championships game on Saturday,
Nov. 6.
Collegiate
Women's Excelsior Division III
No. 1 seeds Oswego and Niagara will square off next Saturday for the Division
III title after taking care of business in the semifinals.
East No. 1 seed Oswego topped West No. 2 St. Bonaventure, 7-5 in one semifinal,
while West No. 1 Niagara was a 22-7 winner over East No. 2 Siena.
Niagara will host Oswego for the Division III championship on Saturday,
Nov. 6.
