Syracuse Tops Rochester for Club Championship
Chargers Earn NYS Rugby Title for Third Straight Year
SYRACUSE, NY -- The Syracuse Chargers beat the Rochester
Colonials, 30-3, to win the NYS Rugby Division III Men's Club Championship.
Playing at Burnet Park, the Chargers claimed the club title for the third
consecutive year, topping Rochester each time.
The Colonials scored first to make it 3-0, but Syracuse matched this with
a Dave Sebast penalty kick. Mike Morschauser scored the first Charger
try on an outstanding individual effort. He received a touch-pass from
Pat Kilian and began down the sidelines. When challenged by a defender,
he pop-kicked over and outran everyone to pick up the fortuitous bounce
and take it between the posts.
Man of the Match Kilian crashed in for two more tries and put Syracuse
ahead at the half, 25-3. The changeover gave Rochester downhill with the
wind and it penetrated to within 10 meters several times. A strong Charger
defense kept them at bay, including a key play when a Colonial player
had crossed the line and was held up from downing the ball by a pair of
Syracuse tacklers.
The final Syracuse try was scored by Chris Robyns as time ran out.
