Season Starts to Wind Down, Playoffs Ahead

SYRACUSE, NY -- With the playoffs looming, clubs continue to position
themselves for post-season seeding in New York State Rugby Conference
(NYS Rugby) play.
Men's Club Division III
The only remaining undefeated teams in Club Division III play,
Syracuse and Rochester met for the only time in the regular season. Two-time
defending champion Syracuse came away with a hardfought 27-19 win to improve
to 5-0 on the season. Rochester falls to second place at 4-1.
Continuing their strong effort in 2004, resurgent Genesee moved into a
second-place tie with Rochester following its 48-26 win over Finger Lakes.
Genesee will attempt to keep the train rolling when it hosts Rochester
next Saturday in Batavia.
Collegiate Men's Premier
Division I
Buffalo (4-0) kept up its strong pace with a 44-15 decision
over RPI. Cornell, coming off its only loss of the season last week to
Buffalo, returned to its winning ways with a 31-5 mid-week win over Binghamton.
Syracuse improved to 2-2 with a 41-17 victory over Binghamton on Saturday,
while Brockport stands at 2-2 following a 22-5 decision over Canisius.
Collegiate Men's Empire
Division II
Four teams remain in the playoff picture in Empire Division II East play.
In the game of the week, Cortland topped previously unbeaten Siena, 18-8,
in Loudonville. Siena and Colgate are now tied atop the standings at 3-1,
following closely by Albany and Cortland, both at 2-1-1. Colgate was a
45-10 winner over Le Moyne, while Albany earned a 33-8 victory over Union.
The Western Division's picture is just as scrambled, with Geneseo atop
the pile at 3-1. St. Bonaventure is 2-0-1, followed by Buffalo State at
2-1. Geneseo topped Buffalo State, 35-8, on Saturday.
Collegiate Men's Excelsior
Division III
Eight teams in two divisions of Excelsior Division III are still in playoff
contention, paced by Paul Smiths (4-0) in the East, and Niagara (4-0)
in the West. Paul Smiths was a 12-7 winner over St. Lawrence this week,
while Niagara dispatched St. John Fisher, 34-12.
Following Paul Smiths in the Eastern standings are Clarkson at 3-1, and
St. Lawrence and Oneonta at 2-2. In the West, Oswego is currently in second
place at 3-1, followed by Fisher and RIT at 2-2.
Collegiate
Women's Premier Division I
Cornell (4-0) locked up a playoff berth with a decisive 41-3 win over
Binghamton. Buffalo improved to 2-2 with a 17-0 blanking of Union. Syracuse
(2-1) and Binghamton (1-1-1) are both in the playoff hunt as well. Syracuse
topped Ithaca, 29-5, on Saturday.
Collegiate Women's Empire
Division II
St. Lawrence moved into sole possession of first place in Eastern Empire
Division II with a 36-10 win over Colgate. RPI scored a huge 18-3 win
over Albany this week, handing Albany its first loss of the season. St.
Lawrence, at 3-1, leads Albany (2-1-1) and RPI (2-1) in the standings.
In Western play, Fredonia, Geneseo and St. John Fisher are deadlocked
at 3-1. Fredonia topped Geneseo, 10-0, to hand Geneseo its first loss
of the season. Geneseo and Fisher will meet next week in an important
game in Geneseo. Fisher was a 22-14 winner over Buffalo State this week.
Collegiate Women's Excelsior
Division III
Oswego and Niagara remained perfect in their respective divisions. Siena,
idle this week, stands in second place in the East at 2-0, while Le Moyne
and St. Bonaventure are tied for second in the West at 2-1. Bonas was
a 58-0 winner over Alfred on Saturday.
