Men's Collegiate All-Stars Fall to New England

ALBANY, NY -- The NYS Rugby Men's Collegiate All Stars were defeated by the NERFU A side, 63-12, in Albany on Sunday, May 16. The match was held at the Northeast Rugby Union LAU All Star competition.

The NYS squad played with determination but could not put together sufficient defense to hold New England at bay. New England scored first and went on to a 45-0 halftime lead. NYS had several good scoring opportunities in the first half only to have the ball held up in goal on four different occasions, and penalties at a couple of key times to relieve the pressure off NERFU.

New York got on the scoreboard in the second half with a try from prop Bob Figueiredo. New England answered with a try of its own before NYS winger Joe Murphy from Buffalo State scored under the posts. The conversion kick by Jesse Jerge finished the scoring for NYS while New England went on to the 63-12 final. The team was captained by JoJo Bucci from Cornell University. Coaches were Mike Hodgins, Mark Kielbasa, and Bob Wilson and the team manager was Tom Rienzo.

In the other game of the day, Met NY fell to New England B, 39-24. Players from all the teams involved in the competition will be invited to try out for the NRU All Star team that will play in the National Collegiate All Star tournament in Boulder Colorado in June.
