ROCHESTER -- NYS Rugby held its High School Championships here yesterday at Rochester Rhinos Stadium. The event, held in conjunction with local-area hosts Rochester Colonials, was the finest in the history of NYS Rugby's high school tournament.
Rochester Rhinos Stadium provided a memorable backdrop for the top six boy's and girl's Division 1-2 youth rugby clubs to compete for New York States Championship. The paid attendance for the event was 718, leading to a total evennt participation of over 1,000.
"What an incredible venue and incredible day of high school rugby," said Mike Hodgins, NYS Rugby President. "A day like this shows off all that is good about our sport. When you can get over 1,000 people participating in and supporting rugby at the youth level, it is a true testament to the growth that we have enjoyed over the last few years."
The afternoon started with the Boys D2 Championship, which saw top-seeded Kenmore East earn a hard-fought win over second-seeded School Without Walls, 29-15.
In the Girls D1 title match, No. 1 City Honors and No. 2 Fairport battled to a 5-5 tie in regulation. After the teams remained tied after the first overtime round of kicks, City Honors claimed the win, 3-2, in the sudden-victory round of kickoffs. The winning kick came on the last of 5 kicks in the sudden-victory round.
In the nightcap under the lights, No. 1 Fairport ran past No. 2 Orchard Park, 25-5, in one of the hardest-hitting high school games in NYS history. While Orchard Park showed strength in loose play, Fairport's set-piece play was exceptional and led it to the victory.
A nice addition to the this year's Championships was the premier coverage provided by the New York State Referees Society (NYSRRS). Each title match was assigned a head referee, two assistant referees a referee coach and an administrator to track time, score and substitutions. The officiating provided a base which led to top-quality play in all three games.
